Marathon Minnow

This species is endemic to eastern Sterea Ellada, it has disappeared from many small wetlands in Attica and Boeotia. The genus Pelasgus is well adapted to the Mediterranean climate of our country, and can easily survive the summer, when the volume of water in its habitats is reduced. It is represented in Greece by five endemic and one near endemic species. The other four endemics are the Epirus Minnow (Pelasgus epiroticus), the Stymphalia Minnow (Pelasgus stymphalicus), the Evrotas Minnow (Pelasgus laconicus) restricted to the Evrotas and Alpheios rivers, and the Thesprotia Minnow (Pelasgus thesproticus). The Prespa Minnow (Pelasgus prespensis) is endemic to the two lakes; some 25% of its total range falls within Greek territory.
